Inquiry Packets - Estimating Plans - Building Plans - NC Cut Files...   What's The Difference?

Inquiry Packets:  New...!  Due to the cost and the time required for copying and mailing, we have discontinued our prior "study plans" offerings and have instead combined those few sheets of study drawings with additional information in order to create a much more useful and complete "Inquiry Packet" for each of the designs listed below.  Our Inquiry Packet includes the Sail Plan / Exterior Profile Drawing; the Interior Profile & Arrangement Drawing (one to four sheets, depending on vessel size); the written Vessel Specification; the Scantling List; and the Equipment List (if over 40').   It is quite a lot of information and represents an excellent bargain.

Our Inquiry Packet is intended for study, planning, commentary, mark-ups, or to consider variations on the layout or alternate rig possibilities.  As such, our Inquiry Packet is not intended to provide sufficient information for builders to create a highly detailed cost estimate for construction quotes.  Builders will require more information in order to determine build costs, and owners will need additional information for adequate construction planning.  However our Inquiry Packet does include most of the information needed in order to create a preliminary owner's estimate of construction costs by using the Profile / Sail Plan, Interior Layout Drawings, the Vessel Specification and the Equipment List.

Estimating Plans:  In order to provide a firm quote for construction of the vessel, builders will need a bit more information.  For that purpose our Estimating Plans include all of the contents of the Inquiry Packet described above, plus the vessel's Structure Drawings (one or two additional sheets, depending on Vessel Size), our Builder Short List appropriate to the specific design, and other documents as described on our Stock Plans page.  We also include our Designer's Cover Letter as an introduction to the builder, and an Owner's Cover Letter template, also for the builder.  Along with any order of Estimating Plans, in order to allow for your equipment preferences we also include your requested modification to the Equipment List and the Vessel Specification.   Although Estimating Plans do not contain all of the details needed for actual construction of the vessel, sufficient information is provided so builders can provide you with a firm quote, and so that you can negotiate a preliminary contract for construction.

Building Plans:   In order to actually begin building the boat, and prior to your construction contract being finalized, the complete Building Plans will be required.  Building Plans include all the contents of our Estimating Plans as described above, and additionally provide all the remaining detail drawings required for construction, such as the vessel's Lines, Offsets, Structural & Joinery Sections and Details, Construction Details, Spar Plans (sail) or Machinery Plans (power), plus a variety of other Detail Drawings and Design Data, including the vessel's hydrostatics, stability, performance, propulsion and range.  In addition, with any order of Building Plans we will always include a revision of the Equipment List and Vessel Specification to suit your equipment preferences.  If the drawings or documents will require further revision for your use, we'll be pleased to provide an estimate for that service.  Please see our Stock Plans page for more information about what's included, and how we can customize a stock design to suit your requests.

Custom Design:   We can either modify any of the designs listed below in order to suit a newly defined purpose, or we can create an entirely new design based on your requests.  Please feel free to inquire about any modifications you may have in mind, or about creating a new Custom Design to suit your specific requirements, or possibly to develop of any of our Prototype Designs into a completed yacht design.

NC Cutting Files:  Several of the Stock Designs listed below for construction in metal have been developed for computer cutting of the metal parts.  "NC" simply means 'Numerically Controlled' - a technology for creating pre-cut boat parts. For details regarding the benefits of NC Cutting and to find out what's included with an NC Cut File package, please see our web page on Computerized Boat Building and on our CAD Design Stream

What Do Plans Cost..?

This is a question we can answer...!  Please see the lists below for prices of each type of plans package for the stock and semi-stock designs that we offer.  The first group is for  Sailing Yacht Designs  and the second group is for Power Yachts.

You will find complete information about ordering plans near the bottom of this page.  To place an order, please see our contact information below, or you can print out our PDF Order Form and send it according to the directions given on the form.

What Will the Boat Cost..?

The most difficult question of all... but one that does have an answer...!   Please see the following articles for information about boat costs, and about the process of soliciting estimates from builders:

The Cost Question    |   Affordable Boatbuilding   |   Estimating Boatbuilding Costs .

What if the Design You Want is Not Listed Below...?

It is our specialty to create new custom yacht designs, and to follow through from concept to launch.  Please see our article on Custom Yacht Design for an introduction to the design process itself, and our Design Stream article for a description of how we use CAD to best advantage throughout the development of a new design.

Prototype Yacht Plans

If you don't see a design here that suits your requirements, please see our Prototypes web page for other designs that are either under development, or the may offer a few possible ideas...  Preliminary study sketches may be available for some of our Prototype Designs.  If you would like to know more about one of them, please contact us.

Sailing & Motor Yacht Plans Notes

STEEL:  Any Steel vessel can easily be re-specified with an aluminum structure.  To convert a stock steel design to aluminum, please add 20% to the cost of the Inquiry Packet, the Estimating Plans, or the Building Plans for that design.

* ALUMINUM:  The Aluminum vessels listed above can only be built in steel if the design is extensively modified for that purpose. Aluminum or Steel designs can also be converted for construction in GRP or cold moulded plywood.  The cost of any of these revisions will be quoted separately.  For more information, please inquire.

** WOOD:  Please note that our Inquiry Packet for Wooden Vessels includes the gross wood order required in cubic meters, but does not include a detailed scantling list (available only with the Estimating Plans).  Please note also that Wooden Vessel plans are generally priced higher, since there will usually be revisions required in order to accommodate the wood species that are available for construction.  Those revisions (within reason) are included in the prices indicated above.

*** NC CUTTING FILES:  Although a complete Building Plans set is required in order build any of our boat designs, the NC Cutting Files are entirely optional.  In other words, the Building Plans are required, even if you purchase the NC Cutting Files for that design.  The cost of NC Cutting Files is in addition to the cost of the Building Plans.  Please see below for discount options that are available...

The NC Cutting Files shown above with prices given in bold black type have already been developed, in which case they will have been created for either metric or imperial dimensioned materials, and for either steel or aluminum (noted in parentheses).

If the vessel will be built in a location that requires changing the measurement system, and / or if there is a change from steel to aluminum structure, then additional work will be required to effect those changes, the cost of which will be quoted separately and in addition to the above prices.

As noted above, if any design is to be converted from aluminum construction to steel construction, it will require an extensive modification of the entire design in order to accommodate the added weight of structure.  This will also require a completely new set of NC cutting files.  Should the conversion from aluminum to steel structure for any of our designs be of interest, please inquire for an estimate, thank you.

New..!  AVAILABLE DISCOUNTS:

  1. If you order Estimating Plans or Building Plans within 45 days after purchasing an Inquiry Packet (for the same design), we will deduct half of what you paid for the Inquiry Packet (less shipping) from your order.
  2. If you order Building Plans within 45 days after purchasing Estimating Plans (for the same design), we will deduct half of what you paid for the Estimating Plans (less shipping) from your order, unless a discount has already been given on the Estimating Plans.
  3. For ALL orders, if an already completed set of NC Cutting Files are ordered along with an already completed set of Building Plans for that vessel (both paid for in full at the same time) we will provide a discount of 15% off your entire order.  And... this discount may be applied in addition to either of the above discount options..!  Note however that this does not apply to any of our designs for which the NC Cutting Files or the Design itself have not yet been completed.

For additional clarification of the above discounts, please inquire.

NACA Foil Shaped Low Drag Aluminum Paravanes

Please see our Roll Attenuation article for more information on Paravanes for Motor Yachts.

LARGE NACA FOIL ALUMINUM PARAVANES

Plan square area is 383 square inches for the wings, not counting the bulb.
Weight is 79 lb., of which approx. 19.5 lb. is lead in the nose of the bulb.
Appropriate for boats up to approximately 50 to 65' on deck by 15' of beam,
depending on displacement.
        *  Design and specification:  $250

MEDIUM NACA FOIL ALUMINUM PARAVANES

Plan square area is 233 square inches for the wings, not counting the bulb.
Weight is approximately 40 lb., of which approx. 10 lb. is lead in the nose of the bulb.
Appropriate for boats up to approximately 35 to 50' on deck by 12' of beam,
depending on displacement.
        *  Design and specification:  $200

SMALL NACA FOIL ALUMINUM PARAVANES

Plan square area is 138 square inches for the wings, not counting the bulb.
Weight is 17.5 lb., of which approx. 4.25 lb. is lead in the nose of the bulb.
Appropriate for boats up to approximately 35' on deck by 10' of beam
depending on displacement.
        *  Design and specification: $150

These low-drag paravanes make use of NACA foil shaped surfaces combined with a lead ballasted NACA foil shaped bulb.  They are designed to be machined out of marine grade aluminum plate and rod so that they can be shaped, and so they are lighter for a given wing area than steel paravanes would be.

The sizes given above are conservatively rated. In other words each size can be used on a larger vessel than is indicated.  It is all a matter of degree.  The roll attenuation will simply be more or it will be less, as compared to that of a larger or smaller wing area.

Effectiveness is a function of wing area and pole length vs your vessel’s righting moment.  With a larger the vessel the poles can be made longer, achieving greater leverage, therefore a greater effect for the same size paravane.

These paravanes are balanced and are adjustable for different speeds.  For more information, please inquire
