What's a "prototype...?"

The prototypes below are design concepts, each of which may have excellent merit for further development. Several of these prototypes or 'concept' designs were originally created as preliminary design studies for various clients in order to address their differing requests. Others are ideas for new designs.

Please see our Prototypes Introduction page for a complete answer to the above question... And see below for the boats themselves...  Please also note that new designs are added as they are developed and are flagged with the symbol so please check in periodically...!

Mono-hull Prototypes From 22' to 130'

50 Meter KLM -  At 164' on deck, could this be the ultimate charter vessel...?  We think so.  This is a larger version of our traditional Indonesian 'kapal layar mesin' series - which literally means 'boat-sail-machine' or motor sailor.  Five or six extreme luxury suites below plus two ultra-luxe suites on the Bridge Deck. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Jeanne V 130 - A large and comfortable all-ocean motor yacht for global voyaging and adventure. Having a rounded metal hull, this design offers extraordinary seaworthiness in a classic motor yacht that will never go out of fashion. Functional, as well as beautiful. The upper deck is large enough to carry a helicopter or sea-plane. With a vessel of this size, there are quite a number of interior layout possibilities. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Redstack 80  - An 80' all aluminum expeditionary motor yacht with classic style.  Primary goals of this design are comfort and safety for offshore voyaging, with an easily driven sea-kindly hull form. At 80 feet overall length, there is plenty of accommodation space for a family, or couple with full time guests.  Sleek...! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Nautilus 80 & Nemo 70 - A little something from our fantasy wish list... A hybrid submarine-yacht, i.e. a sub, complete with mother ship...! The combination when mated is intended for long range.  When the sub is deployed, both ships are entirely autonomous.  Wild...! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Pacific Raider 76  - The 76' Pacific Raider is heavy displacement, having the hull form of a typical Gulf Coast fishing trawler.  In this case, the hull is slightly refined and the superstructure given is that of a trawler yacht - and provides quite a lot of accommodation space.  The pilot house is located quite far forward just as it would be with a fishing trawler. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Johnny B Goode 70  - A 70' steel trawler yacht that is very heavy displacement for maximum comfort and maximum interior space for accommodations.  Hull form is somewhat that of an offshore supply vessel, but the superstructure is that of a yacht.  It is a good combination...!  Interior accommodations are very generous - even for an extended family.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Express Cruiser 60 - 70 - A 60' - 70' sleek and fast all aluminum Express Cruiser. The idea with this one has been to achieve an economical fast semi-displacement cruiser. A low profile is desirable for cruising the canals of Europe and to allow minimum beam for the sake of efficiency. The speed potential is considerable...! Two cabin configurations are described, and several other interior layouts are possible. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Nordic Spirit 64 - All aluminum or steel hull with aluminum superstructure. As with the Nordic Spirit 50, this larger prototype was developed as a revision of the 75 foot Free Spirit. The Nordic Spirit 64 has much more generous space in each location, and has three staterooms forward. The larger size makes possible a variety of saloon / galley arrangements. Both of these are classic trawler types in the Baltic tradition. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Braveheart 63 - Designed for Steel hull and Aluminum house structures, or for all aluminum. Motor sailing capabilities, with an interior and exterior layout very similar to the Greatheart 60 design, but having an integral swim-step aft. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)

Balthazar 62 - All aluminum or steel hull with aluminum superstructure. This prototype was developed in order to have it all, yet in a relatively modest length so that the owner would be able to easily handle the vessel without paid crew. Displacement kept to the least possible for the sake of economy and shoal draft was preferred in order to cruise the Bahamas and the ICW. There are four staterooms below... Amidships, there is a large saloon / galley on the main deck with the pilot house and "sun deck" above. The long foredeck was considered a priority for storage of two shore boats: a 20' launch and a 12' RIB. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Steamer 60  - A truly classic motor yacht.  Low and sleek with a plumb bow and fantail stern... just like a classic steam yacht. The interior layout is ample for a couple and friends, and the main deck accommodations are perfect for summer indoor-outdoor living.  (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)

Peregrine 60 - Metal, wood or composite construction. The assignment here has been to create a traditional looking power voyager that would "fit in" while sitting in any port of the world. Maximum economy of construction and powering were the main goals. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)

Port Ludlow 60 - Steel or aluminum. This prototype was developed in order to have saloon, galley and pilot house all located aft of amidships and all on one level, with a covered exterior deck aft. Above the saloon / galley / pilot house is a large boat deck and flying bridge. The staterooms are below forward. This configuration allows quite a large engine space and generous storage below the main deck. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Greatheart 54 - Steel or Aluminum. Set up for a family with two children or a couple with guests. Walk in engine room, office / workroom, two heads, one with a bathtub! A private owner's stateroom aft and guest or kid's stateroom forward. Excellent layout for privacy! (Preliminary Drawing & Specification Available here.)

Braveheart 53 - Designed for Steel hull and Aluminum house structures, or for all aluminum. Created for a family with children or a couple with guests. Large engine room with below-decks passage between fore and aft cabins, large saloon / dining area, office / workroom, two heads, one with a bathtub! A private owner's stateroom aft and guest or kid's stateroom forward. Excellent layout for privacy! (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)

Nordic Spirit 50 - Originally planned for aluminum construction, but GRP also easily done.  As with the Nordic Spirit 64 this prototype was developed as a revision of the 75 foot Free Spirit.  For the 50 footer, the priority was to fit into a 50 foot slip...! Layout drawings are shown for the 50' version. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)

Ocean Express 49 - A semi-planing aluminum cruiser that makes use of the same interior layout of the Coast Runner 48 above, but with different exterior styling, a walkaround bridge forward of the pilot house, and a slightly longer hull. (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)

Double Eagle 49 -  A displacement steel or aluminum passage making yacht.  Two equal size sleeping cabins, either of which could be called the 'master' suite.  This concept design makes use of the same layout as the Rhumb Runner above, but uses a displacement hull form in order to allow building in steel.  Houses are low for maximum flexibility of travel in the various canal systems, and also for maximum sea keeping.  (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)

Rhumb Runner 48 - A sleek and fast all aluminum cruiser. Two equal size sleeping cabins. The intent of this design has been to fit the maximum accommodations into a fast semi-displacement cruiser under 50 feet LOA. Additionally, the requirement for excellent sea keeping has encouraged keeping the profile quite low. Height to the top of the Pilot House is under 11 feet, so the canals of Europe would be a good possibility. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available please inquire.)

Coast Runner 48 -  An aluminum cruiser having the same hull form as the 48' Rhumb Runner, combined with an expanded interior layout similar to that of the 40' Coaster. Still Euro Canal friendly in terms of height, plus a fast semi-planing hull. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available please inquire.)

Boojum 43 -  A robust ocean trawler in Aluminum, sharing the same WL length and displacement and exactly the same interior layout as the Greatheart 48, but having a different hull form to wrap around it. The idea is to have a true ocean going trawler which would fit a modest slip size, a modest budget, a reasonable four cylinder diesel engine size, and to make use of sail as "get-home" auxiliary power. Two complete staterooms for family cruising...  (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)

Blue Horizon 36 - A fantail stern steel trawler yacht with a layout identical to that on our Greatheart 36 design.  A fantail stern is the perfect end to a steel boat!  Very pretty!  Outstanding sea keeping is assured by a low profile and an extremely seaworthy hull form.  The canals of Europe...?  No problem, the low profile is well within the Freycinet height limit.  Aluminum construction equally possible. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Wave Runner 36 - A sleek and trailerable, yet ultimately seaworthy aluminum cruiser. A fast semi-displacement hull form provides a wide variety of powering options, depending on the desired top speed. Excellent sea keeping is provided by a low profile, also allowing access through the canals of Europe. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Molly 36 - Aluminum, steel or wood. The Molly prototype was developed as the smaller sister to Moxie. Molly has several of the same features of Moxie, but in a more economical size. The ideal canal boat? Very possibly!  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Sweet Okole 30  -  Although intended for aluminum construction, this little trawler would be equally well suited for plywood or fiberglass construction.  Narrow beam allows the ability to be trailered.  A 'midship bridge deck on a 30 footer...?  Well yes it certainly can be done and very elegantly too, thus the name...! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Ferdinand 22 - This tiny all aluminum trawler was created as a concept for a round the world "race" of sorts, called the "Magellan Challenge" so the name "Ferdinand" was a natural. The rules began with a limit of 22 feet LOA, space for two, the ability to be trailered, and the requirement that the boat be as simple as possible to build. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Boojum 22 - A Trailerable Tug Yacht having bilge keels, both for ease of trailering and for taking the ground without any fuss. Hull construction in aluminum.  Wood or fiberglass also possible.    Study Drawings & Estimating Plans available; please inquire.

Power Multi-hulls

'Tunnel CAT' 90  - A unique type of very fast planing vessel - the 'Tunnel CAT.'  This type can be foil borne, with a dramatic increase in speed and efficiency.  Modern styling and a number of interior layout options.  Intended for aluminum or GRP construction.

60' Power Trimaran, "Penny Wise..." -  A power trimaran for aluminum, or plywood, or GRP construction... An interesting design study!  The original request was for a power tri with "traditional" styling. This is so-far a sketch of an idea only, but one which I believe may have considerable merit for long range cruising under power. Efficient passagemaking...? Indeed. (Preliminary design information & Study Drawing available; please inquire.)

'Fast Cat' 50  - A unique type of fast planing power boat.  Essentially a monohull with a tunnel down the  middle, i.e. a tunnel-hull catamaran...  Intended for aluminum construction. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

'Wave Cat' 50 - Shown in the image above, Wave Cat is a fast semi-planing power catamaran.  Intended for aluminum or GRP construction. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
