CONCEPT

The Redstack design images above illustrate an expeditionary long range yacht having classic style.  Primary requirements of the design were comfort and safety for offshore voyaging, and an easily driven, sea-kindly hull form. At 80 feet overall length, there is plenty of accommodation space.

LAYOUT

The exterior and interior main decks are all at the same level.  This allows the ultimate in a walk-through accommodation.  With all the main living spaces above deck, there will always be a good view.  See the Lines Perspective drawing which delineates the interior spaces - as follows:

The pilot house is right forward, and contains ample seating for piloting and observing.  Just aft of the piloting area is the galley and day-head. Farther aft in the deck house is the dining area and right aft is the saloon.  The exterior "patio deck" is covered, yet open to the sides and aft allowing protected entertaining in full sun or in rain.

The below decks accommodation includes a large guest suite right forward, and a combination head / laundry area just aft of that.  Aft of that, below the pilot house and galley is a very large master suite, with sitting area and small office.  Right aft of the master suite is a walk-through head.

Aft of that, and below the dining area is the engine room - and quite a good sized one at that.  Fuel is stowed to port and starb'd in tall tanks, as well as in the bilge.  Aft of the engine room is a "control room" / utility space, which is large enough to provide accommodation for a cook and an engineer.  This space could easily be arranged to accommodate three or four crew.  Aft of that is the lazarette, containing the steering gear and generous storage.

On the house top, there is plenty of room for boat storage.

STRUCTURE

Redstack is planned to comply with the EU rules regarding structure, safety, and stability.  Structure is planned according to the ABS scantling rule for Motor Pleasure Yachts, and stability is according to the IMO requirements for offshore vessels, including the extended weather criteria.

Redstack is intended for construction in fiberglass for hull, decks and house, or alternately in all aluminum.  This offers the lightest overall structure weight for the sake of stability, economy, and efficiency of propulsion.

Interior materials have been chosen to provide light weight, as well as traditional style.  For a family or a couple with guests, Redstack will provide a fine combination of ruggedness, seaworthiness, sea-kindliness, along with a generous measure of traditional grace in the presentation of the yacht.

PRELIMINARY CALCS

The preliminary Redstack design has a working displacement of 180,000 pounds, a draft of 7.65 feet, a waterline length of 71.8 feet, and a beam of 19 feet.  The cabins provide 7' of standing headroom throughout. Mechanical spaces have a minimum of 6' - 8" headroom.

Below are several preliminary calculation results for Redstack in the 'light ship' condition

Length Waterline:  70.9 Ft
Hull & Keel Draft: 7.4 Ft
Beam Waterline: 18.7 Ft
Light Ship Displacement: 165,000 Lb
Light Ship Displacement to Length  (D/L): 206

Displacement Hull Speed in Knots: 11.4 Knots
Approximate Engine HP for Displ. Speed: 400 HP

Theoretical Max Achievable S/L: 1.57
Theoretical Max Achievable Speed: 13 Knots
Theoretical Engine HP Required for Max S/L:  600 HP

Efficient Voyaging Speed (S/L 1.1):  9 Knots
Theoretical Engine HP at S/L 1.1: 185 HP

You will note that the vessel is quite light.  Thus after considering D/L, we find that the hull should be able to exceed the typically assumed hull speed of (L^.5)*1.34 by quite a margin.  Preliminary calcs yield a variety of HP and speed possibilities. We would probably aim for around 12 knots at half load, and a maximum of around 450 hp.

A CLASSIC MOTOR YACHT

Redstack is a truly classic expeditionary motor yacht for world cruising - one that will stand the test of time in terms of style and comfort both inside and out.  A further development of this design is the 130' Jeanne V - very much the same in terms of overall hull form, but considerably larger...
