General Concept
The 60 foot "Port Ludlow 60" has a full displacement trawler hull form. Average waterline length is 54 feet and beam is 15 feet. Displacement will be around 75,000 lb. Draft is just under 6 feet. Draft could be significantly reduced if twin engines were used.
This prototype was developed in order to have saloon, galley and pilot house aft of amidships all on one level, with a covered exterior deck aft. Above the saloon / galley / pilot house is a large boat deck and flying bridge. The staterooms are below forward. This configuration allows quite a large engine space and generous storage below the main deck.
Further Development
This general type can be developed in sizes ranging from around 50 feet to well over 80 feet LOA. The image above and the images at the above links are of the 60 foot version.
The hull form is modeled after tried and true West Coast fishing vessel types for maximum sea keeping ability. If developed for steel construction, more beam and possibly greater draft would be preferred. If in aluminum or GRP, the approximate proportions and displacement above can be used. In any case, long range ocean travel has been the primary requirement, for which this
type would be well suited.
