43' Cutter "GRACE"

The 43' Cutter - GRACE - Kasten Marine Design, Inc.
Larger Perspective

The Concept

Here we have a hull that has been modeled after the 42' Zephyr, the 42' Highland Lass, and the 36' Grace.  Planned for simple construction, but also for fast ocean voyaging, this prototype design has been configured with a skeg hung rudder and a substantial cruising fin keel.  The skeg hung rudder in combination with this kind of keel will provide excellent windward ability and also accurate tracking at sea.

Aluminum for the hull, deck and house structures would be optimum, although steel is equally possible.  The single chine shape is easy to achieve with flat panel material.

So-far the 43' Grace is planned to have sleeping for four, plus a generous galley and settee area.  For a preliminary view of the available space inside, see the layout for the 42' Highland Lass.

The Rig

The cutter rig has been preliminarily chosen.  The rig type would be configured similarly to the Sonja 50 Preliminary Sail Plan, though slightly smaller, and set up as a cutter rather than as a ketch (as shown). An alternate rig type can be seen on the 43' Raven, which makes use of a bowsprit and Bermudan type of main sail having a headboard and a deep roach to the foot.

Being a prototype, there are any number of combinations that would be equally possible, not only with the rig but also with the hull form, the interior, the preferred materials and so on...  This kind of flexibility is the key benefit of working with a prototype or new design.
