General Concept

This prototype was developed in order to have it all, yet to stay within a relatively modest length so that the owners will be able to easily handle the vessel without paid crew.  The hull structure is intended to be aluminum or glass reinforced plastic, per owner preference.

Design particulars are as follows:

  • Length on Deck 62 feet
  • Reference WL 56 feet
  • Beam 16 feet
  • Displacement 74,000 lb.
  • Draft 5.25 feet

Twin engines have been specified for the sake of redundancy of get-home power and for reduced draft in order to cruise shoal water such as the Bahamas, the ICW or the Gulf Coast, or the many shoal water regions of Northern Europe.   If greater draft were possible, a single engine configuration would work equally well.

Accommodations

The interior is planned in order to allow the maximum number of cabins for family cruising and to still allow two fairly equal master suites, whether that be for shared ownership with a second couple, or simply to allow good friends to come along.  A quick walk-through of the interior is as follows:

Below: Four staterooms are planned below as follows:  The master stateroom is planned to be right forward with two others just aft of that - one of which would function nicely as an office afloat.  Head compartments are planned for maximum flexibility to serve the master stateroom and the guest cabins.  The second large 'master stateroom' is located aft of the engine room, which is located amidships.

The amidships engine room is generously sized - even though it houses twin engines and generators...!  The concept with the generators is to have a primary gen, plus a 'baby gen' for overnight when loads are minimal.

Main Deck:  Amidships on the main deck is a large saloon and galley. The main deck is arranged with a "well deck" on each side of the house, and then with a raised deck forward and aft in order to allow maximum interior room.

The long foredeck was one of the primary requirements of this design; specified in order to provide secure storage for two shore boats: a 20' launch and a 12' RIB.  A heavy duty crane is intended, and would even allow placement of motorcycles or a small lightweight automobile on the fore deck. This would be quite handy for island hopping...!

Bridge Deck:  Above the saloon and galley are the pilot house, plus a "sun deck / observation deck" aft with sturdy hand-rails all around, with a stairway for quick access to the main deck aft.

Swim Deck:  Ready access to the shore boats and via a passerelle to the shore is provided by the swim deck.

Roll Attenuation

Having twin skegs for protection of the twin drive lines and twin rudders, there is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of a stabilization system that uses the rudders themselves.  If that level of complexity were not favored, this vessel is ideally suited to the use of paravanes.  For more information on the various options and their relative effectiveness, please see our article on Roll Attenuation.

Further Development

In general, long range ocean travel for an extended family has been the primary requirement, for which this type is well qualified.

This vessel type is suited to sizes ranging from around 60 feet to well over 90 feet LOA.  The hull form is modeled after West Coast fishing vessel types for maximum sea keeping ability.  If developed for steel construction, more beam and greater draft would necessarily result.  If in aluminum or GRP however, the proportions and displacement would be approximately as given above.  If the length were altered, the other proportions would be adjusted as needed.
